Engine and DrivetrainThe 1929 Model A had a 200 ci "l-block" in-line four-cylinder engine. The engine generated 40 horsepower at 2200 RPM and 128 ft-lbs of torque at 1000 RPM. The compression ratio was 4.22 to 1, or 5.1 to one for cars with the optional "police head". Model As were rear-wheel drive. The transmission was a three-speed manual, non-sychronized, sliding gear unit with a dry multi-disc clutch. The ignition was Kettering-type battery-and-coil system and the 6v positive-ground electrical system relied on a generator rather than an alternator. Engine coolant (water) was circulated both by a water pump and syphoning. BrakingThe Model A had 4-wheel mechanical disk brakes. SafetyIn 1929, Ford switched from using standard plate glass to using safety glass in vehicle windows. CapacitiesFuel capacity was 10 gallons.
